By simplest description, ceramic means an “earth baked at a very high temperature”.
The history of ceramics is
as old as the history of civilisation and according to a rumor; when looking for remedis to meet his water needs, human found a kind of earth wetted by rain. The name of this material which could incorporate water for a long time, could take plastic shape when wetted and had lower water permeability was “Clay”. The human being who dropped into fire a container made of such material which carried water discovered that the clay was transformed into a ceramic bowl when fire went out.
It is known that the first ceramic was produced in Anatolia arround 6000 B.C. The ceramic parts obtained during diggings at Catal Hoyuk have reached our time without being spoiled along 8000 years and one of the most valuable sources giving us the first hints related with the history of humanity is such ceramic residuals. Thanks to writings, pictures and symbols provided on such ceramics which came up to our time without being spoiled for thousands of centuries, it has became to acquire information about the styles of living and cultural differences of the past civilisations.
Following the finding of the first pottery type ceramics in Anatolien in the years 6000 B.C., it was found that the first glazed ceramic has been made in Egypt. After Anatolia and Egypt, the ceramic art was spread to the Crete Island. It is known that there were places and roads constructed with baked bricks by the Sumerians in Mesaopotamia in the years 3500 B.C. And the baked bricks were also used in Babylon towers and Babylon palaces constructed around 1200 B.C. The interior parts of Egyptian pyramids were walled with bricks. During the period of Roman civilisation, bricks showed a large development. Thanks to ceramics, the Hitite, Lybian, Frigian, Urartian and Roman civilisations are decoded to a great extent.
